Kenneth de Courcy
Kenneth Hugh de Courcy (November 6, 1909 - 1999) was an editor of the subscription newsletter ''Intelligence Digest'',〔http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/commons/1950/jul/26/defence#S5CV0478P0_19500726_HOC_559〕〔http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/pais/people/moran/classified/〕 as well as a confidant of British King Edward VIII. In the 1940s, de Courcy was part of a plot by conservative members of the British royal court to return the Duke and Duchess of Windsor to Britain and, in the event of George VI ailing, establish a regency.〔http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/theroyalfamily/6624594/Revealed-the-Duke-and-Duchess-of-Windsors-secret-plot-to-deny-the-Queen-the-throne.html〕
Kenneth de Courcy was born the son of Stephen de Courcy of Galway, Ireland. He was an astute businessman and rapidly became rich, owning a chain of tobacco shops and other businesses.
In 1934 de Courcy became secretary of the Imperial Policy Group, which favoured appeasement as the best means of preserving the Empire, and in that capacity travelled the Continent making high level contacts.
In 1934 he founded Courcy’s Intelligence Service to provide early warning intelligence to businesses and government.
Four years later he began ''Intelligence Digest'', (now ''Courcy’s Intelligence Brief''), together with ''The Weekly Review.'' He was joined in business by a cousin, John de Courcy, 35th Baron Kingsale.
As de Courcy's wealth grew, so did his fantasies. He had his Rolls-Royce waterproofed for underwater driving and, having unearthed the title the Duc de Grantmesnil from his father's ancestry, styled himself as such. This was despite its omission from the Almanach de Gotha.〔''Obituary: Kenneth de Courcy'', ''The Weekly Telegraph'', No. 396, February 24 - March 2, 1999〕
De Courcey was accused in the War Cabinet minutes of 13 April 1942 of being "up to mischief" by "writing poisonous publications about the Russians". In 1952 on the death of George VI he wrote to Winston Churchill suggesting Elizabeth II develop a closer relationship with the abdicated King Edward, now living abroad
In 1950 de Courcy married Rosemary Catherine Baker, who was also from Ireland. They had four children, but the marriage was dissolved in 1973.
Between 1953 and 1964 he was a member of the committee of the Evangelical Alliance which organised Billy Graham's 'crusades' in Great Britain.〔http://www.oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/kt9d5nd5g3/entire_text/〕 At several points in his life de Courcy believed the UK Security Service, MI5 were intercepting his mail and telephone communications.〔
In the 1960s, via a company called Sarsden Consolidated Properties, de Courcey planned a garden city development in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). When things went awry, and he was unable to return the funds put up by investors, he resorted to fraud and forgery and was jailed for seven years.〔 De Courcey escaped from custody when he was allowed to visit his lawyer as part of his appeal, although he was recaptured.
De Courcy went on to edit publications such as ''Banker's Digest'' and ''Special Office Brief''. In December 2005 an appeal to De Courcy's 1964 court case was upheld as a miscarriage of justice by the Criminal Cases Review Commission.〔https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=Usm1BAAAQBAJ&pg=PT120&lpg=PT120&d#v=onepage&q&f=false〕
